Work-related knee injuries are often preventable

Many employees have physically demanding jobs, and those demands sometimes strain their knees. This is particularly common in jobs that involve kneeling, climbing, squatting and lifting, such as construction workers, warehouse employees, flooring installers, carpenters, roofers and healthcare workers.

Repeated strain on the knee joints can lead to the joint being damaged. Unlike a sudden twist or fall, some job-related knee injuries develop over time because of the repetitive strain.

Why is the knee prone to injuries?

The knee is a complex joint that has several structures within it. Repeated kneeling can irritate the bursae, which can cause swelling. Frequent bending and heavy physical strain can damage tendons, ligaments and cartilage. The damage often starts to become evident as minor pain that may go away with rest or over-the-counter pain relievers. As the damage worsens, the effects become more pronounced.

Many workers don’t realize that keeping the knee still for too long can be just as damaging as putting too much strain on it. The knee relies on synovial fluid to lubricate the joint and help to keep the movements smooth. The synovial fluid moves around the joint when the knee moves. If a worker remains in one position for too long, the joint can become irritated and stiff.

Simple prevention steps can help to reduce the risk of knee injuries. Taking time to move the knees frequently, using cushioned mats, wearing knee pads and practicing proper body mechanics are all preventative measures.

Any worker who’s suffering from any knee pain should ensure they seek medical care, which is covered by workers’ compensation for work-related injuries. Getting the benefits they’re due sometimes requires appeals, particularly if the injury is due to cumulative trauma. Working with someone who’s familiar with these matters is often beneficial.
