Drivers and their passengers on the busy California roads will always be vulnerable. Encounters with impaired drivers are always a significant risk. Many personal injury and wrongful death lawsuits that are filed in civil courts result from auto accidents caused by impaired drivers.
A 21-year-old San Jose resident allegedly caused a five-vehicle crash that resulted in multiple deaths and injuries -- some critical -- on a recent Tuesday evening. According to the California Highway Patrol, the man drove recklessly and at a high rate of speed shortly before the crash. Officers arrested him for suspicion of being under the influence of marijuana at the time of the accident.
Reportedly, a 39-year-old woman and two children, ages 14 and 9, lost their lives in the crash. Five injured victims, including an infant, were rushed to the hospital. One of the injured children was reported to be in critical condition. Authorities say the alleged impaired driver is on bail of $195,000, and he is facing multiple charges that include gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, DUI causing bodily injury and a weapons charge.
Regardless of the outcome of any criminal charges, the injured victims and the surviving family members of those who lost their lives can pursue financial relief through the California civil justice system. An experienced personal injury attorney can assist with the navigation of wrongful death and personal injury lawsuits that might lead to the recovery of financial and emotional damages sustained. Documented claims can include medical expenses, end-of-life costs, lost income, pain and suffering and more.
